The standard of living in the Lombardy region is one of the highest in Italy, with a per capita GDP of more than $40,000. Most people are employed in industries or agriculture. Many Italian and multinational companies have their head office at Milan. Textiles, furniture, leather, shoes, iron and steel, cars, electronics, mechanical and electrical components are some of the products manufactured in the factories.

In the mountainous Alpine region, generation of hydroelectric power from the fast flowing streams and rivers is the major industry. Tourists who visit the region for skiing also contribute to the local economy. Iron, lead and zinc are some of the minerals found in the pre-Alpine zone. Weapons are manufactured in Brescia , silk and lace in the province of Como. Italcementi, the main manufacturer of cement in Italy is headquartered at Bergamo.

Agriculture in the region is well developed with a high crop yield per acre. Fertilisers are used extensively. Rice, wheat, maize are planted many times a year. Grapes for production of wine are grown in the high altitude regions.
